Dave's writing has been compared to that of Mordecai Richler (Barney’s Version), John Irving (The World According to Garp, Cider House Rules, etc.) and Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy).  He is a writer with a perspective that is just right for today's marketplace.  While many people continue to feel the effects of the global economic meltdown, Dave has, for over two decades, represented the voice of the average person who has lived through layoffs, loan rejections, bankruptcies and unrealized dreams.  His writing gives the “average Joe” element of society a voice on the written page again, providing the prototype for today's genre of "Chump Lit" (i.e., a  Ring Lardner or Raymond Carver for this century).

In his novel, The Unexpected and Fictional Career Change of Jim Kearns, these themes are explored as the lead character, Jim Kearns, must rebuild his life after losing his job following a work-site confrontation.  His wife, in an effort to salvage not only his sanity but also their unravelling family, assigns him a series of life-affirming tasks to help him in his quest.  Through the pages of Jim’s journal, we get an often humorous and sometimes touching view of one man's life journey.
